September into October in many ways has been eerily similar to how August played out - nothing is done and over until I felt mentally like I'd been runovered. One thing after another which consumed my attention and time right up and into other things. I'll spare you the details. This week though has been "normal". I can live with that.
College - Ian is now over a month and a half into his sophomore year of college. From how he describes the classes he's having a more challenging time than last year. I guess that's how it works. He's still involved with the Woodmens Club and he has been accepted into the EcoQuest program so he'll be spending his second semester in New Zealand. This is very exciting news for him, and Carol and I as well. Carol and I are looking forward to looking through the information packet he has received and assisting him to prepare for what lays ahead. We are very happy for him. Last month I took a day off, picked Ian up at the campus and we went golfing at a local 9 hole course. It was a beautiful day and we had a good time. I only lost one ball though my score involved higher math skills than I possess. For not having played in over a year Ian had a pretty good round.
I missed blogging my birthday. 53 years old and here is something I've learned, truth "is" stranger than fiction.
New cell phones - we've moved up from our AT&T Go Phones to a AT&T family plan. That included new phones with features. Carol went with the Motorola RAZR, a pretty popular flip phone, same type as Ian's. Mine is a Sony-Ericsson Walkman slider phone, as the name implies this one plays music. mp3's and is an FM radio. I could also download software to convert music from my CDs to mp3 files and with the USB cord that came with the phone move the mp3's onto the phone easily, cool. There's even a built-in application you can create tunes to play or use as ringtones. Like Mr. Tone Deaf could come up with a catchy tune. Part of this change over in cell phone plans also includes dropping our land line. For the last couple of years we’ve been using Vonage, over the Internet phone service. All in all it has worked out pretty well but when it comes down to it how much phone service do we need. We don’t make a whole lot of calls but it’s nice to have the convenience of having a phone with you.
And finally, another "remark heard in passing". I was coming out of the LL Beans outlet store in downtown Portland and a couple, who may have been around my age, were going in and the man was saying "slowly but surely people are beginning to realize that donuts are not good for them." - seemed to be part of a normal conversation between the couple. Not like the guy was making a joke or something. I just thought it was a strange thing to say, like it was revelation. I will say though that donuts may not be good for the diet, they are good for the soul.
